Two new restaurants opened in our area...

Two new restaurants opened within the last month, bringing more ethnic and exotic cuisine to our area!

Saffron Indian Kitchen, a new restaurant that opened recently in downtown Ambler, brings North and South Indian cuisine to our area. This is a new location for Rahul Bhatia's Bala Cynwyd BYOB, in the former La Cava space. Those who have been there recently that I know say it is the best Indian food in the area!

Pho and Beyond, a Vietnamese cafe at 47 Easton Rd. in Willow Grove, next to Weinrich's Bakery. Check out their menu. "At PHO & BEYOND, you will be able to dine on “authentic” Vietnamese cuisine based on family’s secret recipes, techniques, and skills that have been handed down to us.  Here, you will enjoy our food in a friendly, warm, and relaxing atmosphere." From what I have read the restaurant is very clean, nice, and the food very food.

West Ave Grill opening in February!

As we previously reported, we have confirmation that owner Bob Katz said the West Avenue Grille, the nine-year-old Jenkintown bistro, plans to take over the space in Dreshertown last occupied by Carambola. They expect to open in February, with a similar arrangement to what they have in Jenkintown.

Rapunzel's Wants To Give Back!

Rapunzel's Wants To Give Back!

"We are asking our clients to let us know about families that are in need this year. We know this economy has been tough on a lot of people, some of which can't afford a Christmas this year. We will be sending gift certificates for services (hair cuts, massages, facials, manicures and pedicures) to spread some Christmas joy this year. If you know of a family who is struggling, please send us an email with their name, address, and a brief description of the hardship."

Such a great idea and so nice of this salon! Please help them with this and submit anyone you think could use some extra cheer.

I knew my dolls could become characters in a book, and I just had to find out what direction the book would take”. More stores opening in the new Horsham shopping center

I have been waiting to see what stores were opening in the vacant areas in the new Horsham shopping center (where the Babies R Us and Toys R Us is, as well as the new Corner Bakery). Recently, a new Verizon Wireless store opened (without a tech support center, only sales), and scheduled to open are a Great Clips store, an Ulta store, and Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza.

I've never heard of Anthony's before (it's a Florida chain) but from the website and what I have read it looks like it is an Italian/pizza restaurant with a bar, offering both lunch and dinner. They are also supposed to have an outdoor patio area as well. I can't wait to try it out! (Slated to open in "early 2010")

The Little Treehouse is now offering dinner service (and some great promos)

Starting Monday, November 16th, visitors to The Little Treehouse will be able to experience a whole new concept in dining out for families with young kids!

Remember those meals out spent keeping squirming 3 year olds in their seats, those moments avoiding the evil eye of waiters and child free diners as your mini escapee' who just couldn't sit still' roams the restaurant floor?

Those days are over! At The Little Treehouse, kids are encouraged to leave the table & play to their hearts content, safely within your view. You get to kick back & enjoy a meal & a glass of wine (yes, they are a BYOB restaurant) and some relaxed conversation in the company of people who speak in complete sentences. Everyone has fun - and you don't even have to hire a babysitter!

Their menu features simple yet sophisticated fare using fresh, locally sourced ingredients with a Mediterranean flair. They serve thin crust pizza cooked in a brick oven with a range of delicious gourmet toppings, as well as a selection of appetizers, home made soups, salads, panini, and a kids menu with plenty of healthy flavorful choices your little ones will love. They didn't forget desserts either: make sure to leave room for Uncle Dave's locally produced ice cream - it'll be the best you've ever tasted!

They'll be serving dinner from 5pm - 8pm Monday-Thursday & Sunday, and 5pm - 9pm on Fridays & Saturdays. Don't forget about their lunch service as well - 11am - 2pm daily.

Check out their complete menu.

FREE PLAY! FREE PIZZA!

To mark the launch of their dinner service, they're offering two great promotions to Little Treehouse customers:

- AFTER 5PM THERE WILL BE NO CHARGE FOR PLAY WITH ANY PURCHASE FROM THEIR RESTAURANT MENU!

- THEY'RE OFFERING A FREE PIZZA (SERVES 1-2 PEOPLE) WITH THE PURCHASE OF A KIDS MEAL - just bring in the coupon below

After Thanksgiving Sale at Learning Express 20-30% off

Every year I go to Learning Express in Blue Bell for their Annual Thanksgiving Sale! Everything in the store is 20% off on Friday November 27th, Saturday November 28th, and Sunday November 29th.

And if you get there between 6AM and 8AM on Friday morning, you receive an extra 10% off! This is a great deal if you need to stock up on Chanukah or Xmas gifts for the kids. (Or even birthday gifts!)

A couple things to know:
- during this sale they do not gift wrap (it's too busy and time consuming)
- if you get there on Friday morning (i.e. at 7:45) and are not done your shopping by 8am, you can still get the 30% off. They give you something to present at the cashier to get this discount. (At least this is what they did last year. Hopefully it will be the same this year)

Have fun!

ps. It gets very crowded, like all stores on Black Friday!

Kids U is closing :(

From Kids U this morning:

To all of our Kids U Clients:

It is with much regret to inform you that Kids U will be closing on November 1st. This was a very difficult decision for us to make.

Over the past week, we have been in touch with Mitchell and Toby Kantrowitz, who own The Little Gym in our area. We have met with Toby and Mitch, and find that their offerings and party curriculum is similar to that of Kids U. You can contact either location by phone or e-mail for any of your future needs. Please mention that you are from Kids U. The Doylestown/ Warrington location phone number is 215-343-9748, and the Springhouse location is 215-793-4883. The 2 websites for The Little Gym are Tlgsprinhousepa@thelittlegym.com and Tlgdoylestownpa@thelittlegym.com

We will miss all of you and thank you all for your support!!

This is very sad for our area. I wish Robert much luck!

West Ave Grill opening in Dresher!!!

Word from a very reliable source told me last night that the West Avenue Grill is opening another location in the current Carambola spot in the Dreshertown Shopping Center.

People -- this is big news! We will actually have a breakfast spot in Upper Dublin! Woo hoo! I personally have never been to the West Avenue Grill in Jenkintown but I hear it is very good (especially the french toast with caramelized bananas. Yum!) The menu looks awesome with plenty of items to appease any eater, and I love that there is a kids menu! They also serve breakfast and lunch all day. Yes! Stay tuned for more details on when it will be opening, but preliminarily we hear they are trying to open within the next couple of months.

Makeup!!

Today I endulged myself and I wanted to share my dirty little secret with you...

CITRUS salon and day spa in Blue Bell www.citrussalonspa.com has this AWESOME special going on: right now through November 23rd get a free makeup lesson from the ever fabulous Melissa. (For those of you who are unfamiliar with Melissa's fantastic makeup application and waxing, she is one of those kinds of people that you meet for the first time and ten minutes later you feel like you've known her forever and are inviting her to girls night out....) I don't know about you ladies out there but I never had someone "teach" me how to do my eyes with lots of products and fabulous colors, especially for evenings out. I have been dying to get a lesson for ages but never found the time. Today was definitely the time since the makeup lesson was complimentary- no kidding! I learned all kinds of things about makeup application, brushes, colors, tricks and more!

Citrus has a rewards program that is similar to the credit card reward programs....spend a certain amount and acrue points that can be used towards future purchases and services. Today I received all kinds of points for the products I ended up buying (I could not resist spicing up my product collection and adding some terrific fall colors) and even booking my next makeup appointment.

Though I didn't have any time to check out Therapy, the rumored AMAZING retail boutique attached to Citrus, next time I will be sure to save some time to browse a bit. I have heard from many ladies it's a great find.

Check out Citrus, and be sure to tell them that Jodi Hallen (aka Joy) sent you....I get referral points :-)

Mom's Night Out Shopping Event for a good cause (and you can bring the kids!)

I recently went to Bounce U in Horsham (which is great! See Joy's review about it from a few weeks ago!). The owner is hosting an event to benefit the Ted Lindeman Outreach Foundation (a wonderful organization developed to aid parents of young children who tragically or unexpectedly lose a spouse).

It's Thursday, November 5th from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at BounceU, 420 Babylon Road, Horsham

A $5 donation is requested at the door. Bring your kids to bounce while you shop for just $5 per bouncer! (Half off the regular price!)

Sponsored by bucksmontmom.com & BounceU

For more info, call BounceU at 215-674-8644 or send an email to info@bucksmontmom.com. I am definitely going to try to go to support this great cause!

Finally went to The Sweater Mill

Fellow Blogger "Joy" has been telling me about the Sweater Mill for awhile now, and I finally got the chance to stop in over the weekend. What a great find! The store has both women's and men's clothing and accessories and many designer labels (that you find at more expensive stores) for much less.

I picked up three new (awesome) shirts that were all around $30, but were retail priced around $50-60. You can't beat that!

Definitely worth checking this store out! (And while you are there, you can walk around downtown Hatboro, pick up some flowers and fruit from Produce Junction, grab some lunch or soft pretzels, and have a nice afternoon!)

Bounce U opened in Horsham

We took the kids to Bounce U today in Horsham. They are located in the same complex as Kids U but the entrance is off of Babylon Road. We had to drive around for a bit to find our way to their parking lot.

They started doing their birthday parties and from what we could tell they were eager to please! The place is very clean- its all brand new. Nicely painted walls, carpeting, fixtures...and friendly staff! We had called there ahead of time to make sure there was open bounce time and we were given a reservation time.

They make you watch a 2 minute video before you bounce showing you the rules and what is not acceptable "play" (pushing, going down slides head first, no shoes or barefeet permitted, etc). While we thought it was important to review the rules with both parents and children, we found the fact that they make you watch it before a little much. The kids were too excited to head in to really pay much attention.

We went into two different rooms, each room we were in we were there for about 25 minutes- the first had four different bounce/climbing/slide "rides" and the kids loved it. The second room had more of the same (4 different climbing/slides). The young woman who worked there was sweet and great with the kids. Because they had just opened and did not have their official grand opening event (scheduled for 10/31), we were the only ones there and therefore had the entire bounce experience to ourselves!

We had a very good experience and will definitely be going back! If you decide to head there, be sure to call ahead to find out their open bounce times, which changes daily. They have play date times throughout the week days and evenings. Don't forget to bring socks too!

Montgomery Mall Train Ride is AWESOME

We went to the Montgomery mall today and we were so excited to find out about the new mall attraction...the cho cho train ride! The train, which is run by a very sweet lady, takes kids (and adults if you must....) around the perimeter of the first floor. Every now and again the train cho chos and the kids LOVE it!

The train is there permanently and can be located by the elevators on the first floor. Enjoy!

Michael Vick moving to Horsham?!

Word has it that Michael Vick is moving to town.

Right now it is all rumor and I can't find anything to confirm it online, but lots of people have been discussing that Vick bought a house in Horsham. It's apparently a new house on Limekiln Pike by Babylon Road.

I was at the Horsham post office yesterday and they also said they heard Vick was moving to town. I guess time will tell.

Interesting. Very interesting.

The Melting Pot in Warrington is now open!

I am a big Melting Pot fan. Cheese? Chocolate? Yes, please!

Anyway, I had no idea that they were opening a location in Warrington, but low and behold, one appears! Apparently this is the location that was originally in Chestnut Hill and they moved to Warrington.

If you sign up for Club Fondue you get some special offers (and a coupon, I think).

The Flour Pot moved and has new yummy items!

I love Flour Pot cookies. If you have never seen them or eaten them, you are definitely missing out. The Flour Pot is a cool little cookie boutique in Ambler where mom and daughter team Margie and Abby make all the cookies and other goodies by hand, decorate, and wrap beautifully. I use them as favors for parties and recommend them all the time!

Anyway, they just moved into a new location (which I have yet to check out, but I will be soon!) In addition to their amazing selection of cookies, they now have a larger selection of other items including cupcakes, double chocolate brownies, mint brownies, PB&J bars, and coconut macaroons. Yum!

I love that you can have birthday parties there or decorating parties in their cool kitchen, too. Check it out! Open Mon-Fri 10am-8pm, Sat 10-5pm.

The Cheesecake Factory FINALLY has a kids menu!

I am so excited to share the news that The Cheesecake Factory now has a children's menu for kids 10 and under after decades of not offering one for smaller diners. There are about 13 entree choices such as pastas, chicken strips, pizza, sliders, grilled chicken, mac and cheese and more that range from approximately $3.95 to $6.95. My kids loved the mini corn dogs the other night! Each entree comes with a choice of beverage as well. They also have desserts starting at $1.00 for a scoop of ice cream and $2.00 for strawberries with cream. My family frequents the location in Willow Grove and we always ordered the chicken fingers appetizer for the kids. We were thrilled to see they have their own children's menu now and with so many different choices all very reasonably priced!

Coupons Galore at Peace a Pizza Willow Grove

Jonah and I ate lunch at Peace a Pizza today in Willow Grove, and were offered a "new menu" by one of the guys behind the counter. At first, I refused, thinking the last thing I need is another take out menu to clutter up my kitchen. But then I was told that in addition to it being a new menu, there are a number of great coupons inside. So I took one (or two!).

Do yourself a favor and stop in and ask for a new menu. The coupons are great! The coupons include:
  • Free gourmet slice when you buy a large drink
  • Buy one slice, get one free
  • Free 14" pizza when you buy a 16" pizza
  • Free stromboli with purchase of 16" pizza
  • Free kids meal with purchase of gourmet slice
  • and more. Check out the online promotions page to print out some more coupons, too!
Also notable: the new menu includes some new items like chicken parm, buffalo chicken, mac and cheese, wings, and nuggets. I had the new "strawberry fields" salad which was awesome and exactly what I like in a salad: goat cheese, strawberries, candied walnuts, and a yummy poppyseed dressing.

Great Burger Now Open!

Great Burger located in the Upper Dublin Shopping Center is now open! It is next to DSW and their address is 3616 Welsh Road, Willow Grove (corner of Twining & Welsh Roads). Their phone number is 215-657-6100.

I just ate there today with a bunch of friends and we thought their hamburgers were quite small but they tasted okay. Someone had the chicken sandwich and thought it was good. The kids had hot dogs and seemed to enjoy them. I thought their fries were awesome!

Take a look at their menu. They offer free popcorn which the kids loved! I thought the prices were very reasonable but then again I thought the burger size could have been better!

It's worth checking out. Hours are Monday-Friday, 11:00 AM-8:00 PM and Sunday 12:00 PM-7:00 PM.

Have stuff to get rid of?!

I can't stand all of the kids stuff (toys, blankets, etc) taking up space in my house. So I am packing up a bunch of stuff and heading out to a new children's consignment boutique that opened up in Ambler!!!

It's called A Playful Planet, and they take all kinds of gently used items and give you 50% of the sale price! Take a look at their acceptable items list and how to get started. Of course, if you need something, this could be a good place to get nicer gently used items, too.

I'll let you know how it goes once I get my stuff together and head over there! Here's the info: Horsham Road Center, 1116 Horsham Road, Ambler. 215-583-3494.

Jade Garden Now Open!

A few restaurant changes are going on in the Dreshertown Plaza Shopping Center. Carambola closed after dinner on Saturday (8/22) and Jade Garden opened within the past few weeks. Jade Garden, which features Japanese and Chinese cuisine, opened in the old King Tien space (next to Carambola) for those of you that grew up in the Upper Dublin area and remember the restaurant that had pictures that really looked like real water falls (of course I was a kid at the time). I have heard the Chinese is better than the sushi, but I have yet to check it out myself. They are located at 1650 Limekiln Pike, Dresher and their telephone number is (215) 542-3890.

Carambola Closes

Carambola in Dresher closed it's doors after dinner on Saturday evening. It had opened in October 1997 by owner Danny Nejberger. He said rising gas prices starting last summer shrank his customer base and commodity prices rose. His lunch business fell 40 percent after layoffs at local business parks followed by dinner declining as much as 40 percent. He was unable to sustain the loses anymore.

Bounce U Opening in Horsham

I know there are a ton of bounce places around this area, but none as close as the new Bounce U that is opening September 19th. Located just off Horsham Road in the Babylon Business Campus (the same campus as Kids U), this should be a great new place for kids birthday parties and open bounce for the kids!

A couple offers: join their VIP list to hear about special events and announcements (or you can just check back here ;) Email your name, child's name(s) and birthday(s) to horsham.pa@bounceu.com. Their first big event will be the Gala Grand Opening Party in early October! Also, if you decide to book a birthday party before their Grand Opening, they will provide a free cake! Fresh Market Now Open! (and I checked out Qdoba too)

So I checked out the Fresh Market today and was pretty impressed with their selection of food. Everything seemed really fresh and looked so good! Their produce looked amazing! The prices for certain things seemed a little higher than what I was willing to spend for that particular product. It seemed to be a cross mix of Whole Foods and some regular grocery items you would find at Giant. The place was packed with people and it was a little difficult to move my cart around but I managed to get by (even though I did knock something over coming around a bend)!

I ended up purchasing a banana chocolate chip loaf which looked amazing. I got it home took a bite and noticed it had NUTS in it! I was not happy for 2 reasons. I hate nuts in my banana bread and the label did not say banana NUT bread. There was nothing to indicate I was purchasing something with nuts in it. I am not allergic to nuts but am thinking how so many people have nut allergies and would be upset if they went to bite into banana chocolate chip bread and found nuts all over it. I called the store immediately and spoke to the store manager who completely agreed the label should read banana nut chocolate chip bread and offered to refund me my money. She said she would let corporate know as well!

So that's my first experience at the new Fresh Market in town!

I also happen to check Qdoba out as well. It was super hot inside (clearly have ac problems) but the food was pretty good. I had a chicken and cheese quesadilla (which is the only Mexican food I really eat) and I liked it. I also had some quacamole and chips which were fair. I like Baha Fresh's better. My son had a kids version of the chicken quesadilla and ate it right up! They have 3 choices for kids. It was packed at lunch time, but the line seemed to move pretty quick! I am not rushing back as I don't love Mexican food, but it is worthwhile checking out.

Want to stay updated with our blog?? Email!!!

I got some requests that some of you would like to be emailed blog updates. Well, take a look at the right at that nifty little email subscription box. Isn't that cool and aren't I so web savvy? (It only took me hours to figure out how to add that! Whew!)

Anyway, you can subscribe with just your email name or if you want to subscribe using a feed that works too. (I personally think just getting entries emailed is easier for me, but maybe that's because I'm not so web literate?)

I hope you enjoy this new feature! :)

ps. Also feel free to "follow" the blog by clicking on the follow button. This allows you to bookmark this blog (along with any others you like) to keep them organized.

Restaurant Review of Dettera -- a new "wine bar" in Ambler

So a few weeks ago I tried the new restaurant and wine bar, Dettera, in downtown Ambler. I was very excited to try this place as they were marketing it a "wine bar" (and I love wine flights) and it really looked beautiful inside. Though I had a nice time and a good meal, I found it to be expensive and not really a wine bar (just a restaurant with a traditional wine list)

Pros of the restaurant:
- very pretty inside, very hip. I definitely felt like I was downtown or somewhere not 5 minutes from my house. They also have a really nice outdoor alley section that you can sit in which looked awesome.
- I loved the upstairs lounge section -- very cool area with a fireplace, couches, etc. I will definitely be back to hang out in this area with some drinks and apps.
- The food was pretty good! Not amazing, but I also went just a few weeks after they opened so it could be even better now. The menu had a nice selection.
- very close to my house! Always a pro!

Cons:
- Pretty expensive. I went with a group of friends (there were 6 of us) and we shared apps, 2 pizzas, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts. We each had a glass of wine. Each of us paid $50, which seemed a bit steep.
- No wine flights or anything to really make it a "wine bar"

Overall, I liked the restaurant and I will definitely be back. But the next time I go it will be for apps and drinks, not a full meal. (Or I will watch more closely what I order to make sure it's not a fortune!) I think it's a great idea to see a movie at the Ambler theater and then to go Dettera for some drinks after. If you go, enjoy! And let me know what you think!

Dresher has a farmers market?!

My friend Susie, who knows everything and anything in the area (don't worry, she will be blogging on here soon!) told me about the Dresher Farm Market. Now I have lived in this area for over 3 years and haven't heard or been to this place until TODAY! OMG! I can't believe this!

So I went in today. It is such a great and adorable place! It's right on Limekiln Pike, right where Limekiln and Susquehanna divide (across from those new townhouses that are being built)

Anyway, inside this little gem are amazing, juicy fruits and vegetables, incredible pies, cakes, and cookies (hot from the oven!) and other gourmet, local food items, like fresh tomato sauce, homemade fresh pasta, Bobby Chez crab cakes, fresh mozzarella cheese, and more. Most of their items come from Lancaster and are all fresh. They also have mulch, plants, flowers, etc. The owners were so nice and sweet and very helpful.

They are open 7 days a week, and take credit cards! (I NEVER have cash on me so this is a biggie!) They are open until after Thanksgiving and then close Dec 1st through March. This is a great place to get holiday baked goods (you can pre-order if you want), or to stop in for fresh fruit or for dinner! I am definitely going to become a regular here. So excited! Tonight I'll be dining on some homemade gnocci with fresh tomato sauce and some crabcakes. YUM!

Kid's eat free at Moe's Southwest Grill on Sundays!

In this economy when I hear the word free, I am very interested to hear what that entails! My kids love eating at Moe's located in the English Village Shopping Center in North Wales. With the purchase of an adult entree, kids eat free on Sundays!

1/2 price Sushi at Fuji! YUM!

A few weeks ago I went to Fuji Japanese Steak House in North Wales (next to Whole Foods and Chuck E Cheese) with some friends for some sushi. It was a Tuesday night and we were so surprised to see the place totally packed.

Well, a few minutes later we found out that Mon and Tues at Fuji (every week!) is half price sushi night! And I'm not just talking about a couple basic California rolls, either! Everything we ordered was 1/2 off and rolls were averaging around $2-3 each! Insane! And the sushi there is great! (And I'm pretty picky.)

Three of us ate for $30 (no lie) and got salads and drinks, too. And we ordered a good number of rolls, many of them above your basic spicy tuna roll.

Love this! Maybe I should go back tonight!? Anyone want to join? Yum! Enjoy if you go!

Qdoba now open!

The new Qdoba Mexican Grill is now open in the new Horsham shopping center on Welsh Road next to The Fresh Market which is opening next week. Check out their menu. It looks like it has all of the usual suspects that you would expect to see at a Mexican grill. Hopefully it will be worthwhile when I check it out. I will let you know!

Free pizza for kids Monday nights at the Fireside Grille!

Tonight I am trying out free pizza night at the Fireside Grille. I have a bunch of friends who love this place, but for some reason I have never been there. I can't wait to try it! I'll report back later...

Fresh Market signs are up!!!

I was on the phone with a Lafayette Hill friend today while I was driving past Fresh Market (on Welsh Road by the new Babies/Toys R Us) and she was remarking about how lucky we are to have a Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, AND a new Fresh Market opening up, all within a few minutes of us! She's right!

If you haven't seen it yet, the Fresh Market signs are up both on the store and on the shopping center signage. I have never been in a Fresh Market store before, but from what I heard, it sounds like it is a cross between a produce store and a Whole Foods. We shall see!

Anyone know when it is opening?

New local mom and pop pharmacy opening

So I drove by a new pharmacy - I think it's called Eric's Pharmacy? - that's opening up around the corner from me near Maple Glen Pizza. I'm all for people opening up new businesses around here, but a new pharmacy, smack in the middle of already established CVS and the new pharmacy within Genaurdis????? They claim to offer delivery service, which sounds nice, especially when I have sick and screaming children at home to deal with, but I just don't see how they are going to make it. I guess we'll see!
